Valparaiso Local News

News for Portage, IN - Friday October 9th, 2009 6:50pm
OCTOBER
Where has this year gone? It is already October, again. This year in real estate has been strong in the Porter County area. Much has been said in the national news that the market is down, pricing is down, and homes are not selling. You must keep in mind that all markets are local. What is happening in Florida, or California does not always apply to our area. Yes, our pricing has slipped from two years ago, and there is a high level of inventory of homes on the market, but homes are selling here in northwest Indiana. The fastest moving price range for homes in our area is $120,000 to $300,000. First time home buyers are leading the way for purchases. The government tax credit program has helped greatly. If you know of someone that is thinking of buying a home for the first time, time is running out for the tax credit program. New homes need to be purchased within the next month to qualify. There are rumors that the program will be extended and expanded, however we always caution buyers not to rely on rumors. Interest rates are still low, prices are still low, and inventory of homes for sale is still high. Now is the time for buyers to get into the market.
